Wagner partly composed his opera “Parsifal” here, and today author Gore Vidal lives and derives inspiration from this charming town.
to find yourself at Villa Rufolo.where every year great concerts are held with acclaimed artists from all over the world choose to take their repertoire to ravello. The Beautiful gardens with views across the mountains and the Coast below. The charms of Ravello also captivated an Englishman, Lord Grimthorpe, who built the Villa Cimbrone early this century with the help of his valet, Nicola Mansi, a native of Ravello. Together they transformed an ancient villa, enriching it with antiques, paintings and relics collected from all over Italy.

 About Pompeii
This is a must… if you are arriving into the area of Naples or amalfi coast then you must place a tick on your agenda to get to see Pompeii it’s so important
Because it covers 2000 years of history and you can actually walk through the ruins and imagine being there 2000 years ago,
Pompeii itself to enjoy a Pompeii tour a little description on the area
Pompeii was buried in one of the most disastrous volcanic eruptions in history.
The ruins of the dead city are deeply moving, for the Romans seen still to people it in the deep silence.
The centre of the modern town is the shrine of the Madonna del Rosario, an interesting basilica of the 19th century, which has become an important pilgrimage centre. On the left of the sanctuary there is the small Vesuvious Museum, where you can see samples of the volcanic matter ejected from Vesuvious with lithographs and photographs tracing the various eruptions and scenes from the life of ancient Pompeii. From the bell-tower there is a splendid view of the dead city.
The eruption of Vesuvious destroyed also Herculaneum and Stabiae in August 79. The younger Pliny, watched the cataclysm from Cape Miseno and give a description of the scene which has become classic. Pompeii was rediscovered at the end of the 16th century by the architect Fontana; however it was only in 1748 that systematic excavation began. Here the works have been less arduous than in Herculaneum as the volcanic matter was not so deep.

The Pompeian House
There are several types of dwellings in Pompeii. Very particular is the type of house inspired by Greek designs richly decorated with a larger number of rooms. The roman dwellings are instead more limited but they have more refinement in garden lay-out.

Naples is located in a lovely bay, filled by a sea of dark blue, a horizon bounded by Posillipo, the Islands, the Sorrento Peninsula and the Vesuvious. The noisiness and vivacity of the people make this town “the permanent play house in Italy”.

Historical Notes
Naples is called the Parthenopaen City because according to legend the Siren Parthenope gave her name to the town. In fact, its origins are greek: It was conquered by the Romans in the 4th century B.C. Rich inhabitants of Rome like Virgil, Augustus, Tiberius, Nero used to spend the winter there, but the Neapolitans themselves retained the Greek language and customs until the decline of Empire.
The French Revolution brought here troops and a Parthenopaen Republic was set up. A French kingdom was created next under Napoleon’s brother Joseph Bonaparte. Later Joachim Murat, Napoleon’s brother-in-law, promoted excellent reforms.
The French Pope Clement VI called Charles I of Anjou to the throne of Naples. His son, Charles II and is grandson, Robert I, succeeded him. Robert the Wise, whose brother Louis became Bishop of Toulouse and was canonised, attracted poets, scholars and artists to this court. Boccaccio and Petrarch spent years at this court.

Art of the City
MEDIEVAL SCULPTURE AND ARCHITECTURE
Under the princes of the House of Anjou architecture borrowed from France its Gothic style. Sculpture was influenced chiefly by Tuscans.
As painters of mural frescoes the Florentine Giotto and Pietro Cavallini, a Roman artist, still under Byzantine influence were outstanding.
In the 17-18th century the Neapolitan School of Painting sprang up and it was originated with Spanish and Bolognese masters influenced by Caravaggio.
This school had a style of its own in the form of realism in warm colours on a basis of chiaroscuro.

THE NEAPOLITANS
The Neapolitans speak the dialect of Naples: They fear the jettatura (the Evil Eye), from which the protect themselves by touching a little bone or coral horn they carry in their pockets.

TRADITIONS AND FESTIVALS
On 8 September the sumptuous religious festival of Madonna di Piedigrotta and on 16 July Santa Maria del Carmine take place in the town.
Twice a year, on the first Saturday in May and on 19 September, at the Cathedral, the Feast of the Miracle of St. Januarius (San Gennaro) is held. The saint’s blood, kept dry in a flask, is supposed to liquefy.

GASTRONOMY
The restaurants and the pizza shops of the towns serve Neapolitan dishes.
It would be nice to have a taste of the “zuppa di pesce” – fish stew -, of spaghetti served with fresh tomatoes and lightly cooked do not forget is the pasta mixed with shell-fish and especially the “pizza”, a cheese tart with tomato sauce, sometimes auchary, capers and wild marjoram. All is accompanied by the white wine of Capri or Ischia, the wine of Vesuvius or Lacryma Christi (Tear of Christ), which have a delicate taste.

A LOOK AT THE STREETS AND THE QUARTERS
Naples is a world of contrasts: disturbing but familiar, fascinating but full of noise. The traffic is heavy here and tourists need determination to venture across the roads.
In the port tourists embark for Capri, Ischia and Sorrento at the Beverello jetty.
The heart of the city is the Piazza del Plebiscito, near which is the Galleria with its shops and cafes.

MAIN SIGHTS
New Castle: the castle, built in 1282 by Pierre d’Agincourt, the architect of Charles I of Anjou, it is also called the Maschio Angioino.
St. Charles’ Theatre: it is grey and white and it is a good example of a classic 18th century Italian theatre built under Charles of Bourbon in 1737.
Piazza del Plebiscito: it is a semicircular “square” and it was laid out in the reign of Murat. In the center you can admire the equestrian statues by Canova of Ferdinand and Charles III of Bourbon.
Royal Palace: the palace was built at the beginning of the 17th century by the architect Domenico Fontana and was remodelled several times.
Port of Santa Lucia: Santa Lucia is the name of the small port from where people can watch splendid sunsets. Here the typical restaurants and the austere Egg Castle make a picturesque scene.
Aquarium: The aquarium in the Villa Comunale gardens shows 200 species of sea creatures from the Bay of Naples together with marine flora.
Mergellina: Mergellina with the small port of Sannazzaro is one of the few places around Naples for a stroll.

MUSEUMS
National Archaelogical Museum: it is one of the most famous museum in the world with works of art belonging to the Greco-Roman Antiquity, to the Farnese family and treasures discovered at Pompei and Herculaneum.
Carthusian Monastery of St. Martin: it is situated on a spur of the Vomero hill. The monastery was founded by the Anjou dynasty and was almost completely remodelled in the 16th and 17th century. Near there is the Castel Sant’Elmo, a massive structure with bastions. A museum was installed inside the monastery in 1866. It includes historical and artistic collections. The monumental section is a curious example of the Neapolitan Baroque style.
Capodimonte Palace and National Galleries: it is a royal estate and includes a palace, a landscape garden, a hamlet, Casino della Regina and the remains of a porcelain factory famous in the 18th century.
The palace, built between 1738 and 1838, is a severe structure. Different pictures displayed in groups illustrate the varius artistic movements.
The royal apartments contain fine furniture and a porcelain museum.

SPACCANAPOLI QUARTER
This is the heart of old Naples. With its churches and its ancient streets it is the most engaging part of the town.
Via Benedetto Croce, San Biagio dei Librai and Vicaria Vecchia bejond the Via del Duomo form the maix axis of Naples, which follows the corse of the Roman Decumanus Maximus.

CATHEDRAL
It was built in 14th century Gothic and its façade of 19th century still has its 15th century doorways.
In the south aisle the Chapel of St. Januarius is a rich 17th century Baroque style. On the end wall, a reliquary placed below the statue of St. Januarius holds two glass phials containing the Saint’s blood.

This smaller part of the eruption is sometime forgotten but archaeologist find it to be much more of importance firstly the ruins are so preserved that even the loaf of bread has managed to survive these 2000 year of life

When Vesuvius erupted on 24 August 79 AD it engulfed the two flourishing Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as the many rich villas in the area. Since the mid 18th century these have been progressively uncovered and made accessible to the public.
The vast expanse of the commercial town of Pompeii contrasts with the restricted but better preserved remains of the holiday resort of Herculaneum, whilst the superb wall paintings of the Villa Oplontis at Torre Annunziata give a vivid impression of the opulent life-style of the wealthier citizens of the early Roman Empire.
It’s an old city near the Vesuvious descents. In 79 a.C. was totally covered by lava; later discovered again by Grecian, and dedicated to ercole in 1709. The excavations were inordinate and still today uncompleted, but we could admire a theatre and some thermal baths.

Pompeii

Majestic and menacing, Vesuvius still dominates the Neapolitan landscape. From the Eighteenth century onwards travellers have been prepared to tackle the climb up to the top in order to admire the panorama and look down into the crater. There is no better starting point to begin a journey through the history and culture of Campania.
A journey which takes us back in time, as far as that 24th of August in 79 A.D. when Vesuvius ‘put on a show’ with a devastating eruption which buried Pompeii, Herculaneum and Oplontis.
The rediscovery of the places that were victims of the wrath of the volcano came about almost by chance. In 1709 the prince d’Elboeuf, was having a well dug in his Vesuvian residence, when he came upon the remains of the theatre of Herculaneum. From then on, researches were made which brought to light an archaeological, artistic and historical heritage of inestimable value, which every year draws millions of visitors.

Pompeii
Being an important commercial centre in Campania felix, played a strategic role in the redistribution of goods between Rome, the inland cities and the ports on the Mediterranean. The life of the city centred around the Forum. Still today one can admire the remains of the Basilica, seat of justice and chamber of commerce, religious buildings and the Macellum, site of the marketplace. From the main square streets lead off to the ancient city, revealing majestic houses, such as the House of the Faun and the House of the Vettii, with their splendid frescoes. The shops in via dell’Abbondanza, offer a lively impression of everyday life two thousands years ago. From here we carry on to the Stabian Baths, the oldest public baths in Pompeii, ending up at the massively impressive Amphitheatre, where even today, as in the Large Theatre, there are concerts and theatrical productions.
Just outside the city, stands the Villa of the Mysteries, the most ‘enigmatic’ monument in Pompeii, with its grand fresco celebrating the mysterious cult of Dionysus.
In summer the ruins can also be visited at night. ‘Suggestioni al foro’ is a theatrical production which, through sounds and voices echoing around the temples and houses, recreates the atmosphere of the ‘lost’ city. The visit ends with a multimedia show which reconstructs the dramatic phases of the eruption with special effects and filmed images.
